#IchWill ernst genommen werden. Als Frau im Radsport. Ja, ich bin auf Social Media aktiv, ja ich habe auch einen Blog. Aber in erster Linie fahre ich Rad, mache Solo bikepacking trips, nehme an Rennen teil und mache Triathlon im Verein.

I want to be taken seriously. Yes, I do write on Social Media and on my blog sometimes. But I see myself more as a cyclist, triathlete, as a women with many goals.

Ich trainiere 5-6 x in der Woche, habe ambitionierte, sportliche Ziele, will als Frau aber auch als Athletin stärker werden und andere dazu motivieren, auch an sich zu glauben und sich nicht zufrieden zu geben mit der Komfortzone.

I train 5-6 times a week, I have ambitious goals on a personal and a sport level. I want to become a stronger woman and athlete. And I want to motivate others to also belive in themselves and do not settle for their comfort zone.

Ich finde wir Frauen müssen nicht dazu sagen müssen "Ich mache wirklich Sport und tu nicht nur so auf meinen Fotos". Das zu betonen ist irreführend. Natürlich trainiere ich hart. Natürlich fahre ich "im echten Leben" Rad. Das gibt mir Kraft, das bereichert mein Leben und ohne das wäre ich heute nicht ich.

I don't think as a woman I have to underline all the time that "I really train. Not only on pictures". Of course I do. This is what I love, what gives me strength, what makes me become more myself. "The real life" is way more exciting than my social media life. This is what is important to me.

SONRISAS for you 🤍

As temperatures are dropping rapidly and summer left without a long goodbye, I think it’s time for some extra motivation to stay active 🛋🚀

fact 1: we cannot change the cold temperatures. 🥶

fact 2: working out reduces stress, strengthens the immune system and releases endorphins. ☀️

combine 1 + 2: working out outdoors during fall/winter is the best way to adapt and deal with the changing temperatures. I get my daily portion of endorphins (= happy hormones) and it keeps me healthy and fit.

Running or cycling in the cold makes me feel like I conquer the unstoppable cold. I win. I move. I am free. I don’t let something I cannot change restrict me. That’s power & a strong sense of self-empowerment I feel during and afterwards.

It doesn’t have to be a three hour ride. A small spin is enough. Or consider running instead of cycling when it rains. Be creative before not going out at all. It’s about finding solutions instead of excuses. Right? ✊🏽

Plus the hot shower feels so much more rewarding than it does during summer. The motto is: Winter miles are summer smiles. 😬

Life comes in waves, or in seasons, or in periods. No day is the same, no training is the same and neither is a period like the other. 🌊

The last couple weeks I was full of energy and nobody could get me off my bike. This week I am taking it easy and enjoying other things in life. Sometimes I know it’s because of my cycle, this week it’s just because. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Reading and talking about female physiology I have learned to understand the importance of a healthy cycle and how it influences training and recovery (and life). 💡

Unfortunately, there is no „one-fits-all“ solution in science that tells us exactly on how to train and how to deal with the period. The symptoms before and during the period are individual and so are the levels of hormones. Basically, every human has to find out what intensity and recovery works best for them at the end of the day.

By the way, males are not constantly „the same“ everyday either. Exercise and recovery also influences their levels of hormones and bodies. The difference between men and women is that females do have a „bit more extreme“ highs and lows. We are lucky to have the period as an indicator whether our body is in balance. The dudes don’t have that 🧑🏼‍🏫

Taking the pill is not a quick fix to have a regular period. The bleeding when taking the pill is not a natural period. And also the hormones in the pill are not natural and don’t fulfill the health benefits (like protection of our bones) like natural hormones do. The pill has a lot of side effects and may prevent muscle growth and negatively influence our overall well-being. Read about it and reconsider other contraceptives. 💊 🚫

Gravel is about the people and the adventure: riding with others makes me so happy! And seeing new places also makes me so happy! No matter if I have my period or not 🙃 But of course, my menstruation influences how I feel and how I perform 👊🏽

I want to share a few learnings from being on my period on long events:

1️⃣ riding and movement in general helps me so much with my menstrual bleeding and my belly pain 🩸
2️⃣ I feel like I am stronger on the bike DURING my period than the week before my period 💪🏽
3️⃣ talking about it with other female athletes helps me to deal with it ✌🏽
4️⃣ always carrying some wet wipes in case there is no running water is a good idea 💡

Knowing that having my period means that I am healthy is a piece of very positive information for me. I am aware that the amount of endurance sports I do puts stress on my body. Skipping my period would be a warning that it may be too much stress. Working out three weeks in a row and taking one week off fits my period very well: I usually like to take it easy the days just before I get my period. And then I start increasing my training again until three weeks later. By the way, I am using the FITR Woman App @fitrwoman to track my period and get some useful insights about how to fuel and what to focus on during training accordingly to my cycle! 🤓

How do you deal with your period on outdoor adventures?

Ich fahre jetzt schon seit fünf Jahren Rennrad. Passend dazu habe ich fünf Fragen, die mich immer wieder zum Grübeln bringen. Vielleicht könnt ihr mir helfen:

1️⃣ Wann kommt der Punkt im Leben, an dem ich es einfach hinnehmen sollte, dass ich bei einer Ausfahrt, beim Pinkeln am Straßenrand, wo es leider nichts zum Verstecken gibt, mindestens einmal angehupt werde?

2️⃣ Wann ist der Moment, an dem es einfach normal ist, dass ich mindestens 20 mal gefragt werde, warum ich "noch" ohne Klickpedale Fahrrad fahre, während mein männlicher Begleiter kein einziges mal gefragt wird?

3️⃣ Wie lange warten, bis wir alle es einfach normal finden, dass bei Rennen und Events in der Regel deutlich weniger Frauen an den Start gehen (teils <10%)?

4️⃣ Ist es nicht viel zu viel verlangt, dass das bei dem größten Radrennen der Welt auch Frauen in irgendeiner Form starten können?

Wir könnten auch einfach zufrieden sein damit, dass bekannt gegeben wurde, dass die "schönen Podiumsfrauen" bei der Tour de France keine Objekte oder Preise seien und dass also eine der beiden durch einen Mann ersetzt wird in Zukunft. 🍾

5️⃣ Ist es normal, dass andere Frauen aus dem Radsport mit denen ich darüber rede, mir immer wieder sehr ähnliche Geschichten erzählen? Habt ihr noch mehr Fragen? Oder Antworten? Was bringt euch zum Nachdenken?

Ich will nicht haten, ich will nicht böse klingen, aber manche Fragen lassen mich nicht los. Ich erwische mich selber dabei, dass ich manche scheinbaren Normalitäten schon internalisiert habe. Dabei ist der aktuelle Fahrrad-Boom und der Fitnessdrang der Gesellschaft ein guter Anlass, mal über solche Fragen mal genauer nachzudenken und zu überlegen, ob das wirklich alles so normal ist. 🤷🏼‍♀️

To combine sports and travel has been such a game changer for me. Not only can I get myself from A to B, but stay active, build endurance and strength.

Exploring the areas just outside my doorstep and getting lost in the alps within biking distance has been a wonderful experience.

Even though, we could not cross over to Slovenia, we are very fortunate to be able to travel at all during these times.

Today, we are heading home from Innsbruck by bus. Great last day of the trip spent with @verena_boehe and lots of interesting exchange about female cycling and extreme sports. Thank you @verena_boehe 😊

Dear diary, 5 days cycling and one rest day are in the books. The route: Constance 🇩🇪, Egg 🇨🇭, Landeck 🇦🇹, Naturns 🇮🇹, Corvara 🇮🇹 and tonight made it to Forni di Sopra 🇮🇹.

So far cycled 520km in length and 7.750 meters in height. Some gravel, some cycling lanes and some main roads. A good mix of all what cycling has to offer.

I often have to remind myself that we started cycling from my house. The adventure started right on my door step. How cool is that?

And of course, tasted countless cappuccini and ice creams to survive this heat.

Love to soak up aaaaaall the energy at the top. I will need it for the next time I will be suffering this uphill, push and hike battle.

After we crossed the Reschenpass yesterday, we dropped down to 200m.a.s.l. again, had a cappuccino in Bozen and knew we had to go all the way back up above 2000m.a.s.l again.

We were unsure of we could manage the 100+km and the 2000 vertical meters in one day to reach the Sella Group. On Komoot I saw the climbs were gonna be dark red/black which means approx. >30% incline.

But the sun was shining all day, we had a beautiful morning with a big breakfast and 3 good, nutritious food stops in between.

After the last break we decided to go up. The last 10km turned out to be the hardest of the day. In the end, couldn’t be happier and the view couldn’t be better. An absolutely mesmerizing place on earth. 🙏🏽

Cheers to all of you, who DO! Here’s to the spontaneous, lightpacking, just-go-for-it kind of mentality that I miss so much sometimes.

No over-planning, no click pedals, no problem.

Just crossed the Hochtannenbergpass, the Flexenpass, the Arlbergpass and the Reschenpass in the last two days. 3 days, 300km, 3000 vertical meters so far.

The plan and the route evolves as we go. Just like the weather changes and the meters of altitude come and go.

Speaking about rolemodels: Instagram is great to find role models! I am happy to get connected and follow along some super inspiring people!

I enjoy to not only "consume" content but also "produce". Like the #strongerthanyouthink posts about female physiology and infos about the menstrual cycle (thank you for joining @marirennt!).

What’s all this posting for? In the first place, I do this for myself - to learn something, it gives me energy and some kind of purpose. To share it and to get some response is amazing - but this comes second.

It’s the same for cycling. I do it for myself. To become stronger and more independent. To explore and to learn. Sharing this with you is great, but I would still be doing it without posting about it.

I believe just posting pretty pictures without meaning disconnects us from reality - especially concerning us women when we have SO MUCH important shit to talk about!

Instagram is fast. It influences how we think and how we see the world. The good thing about it is, everybody can contribute and therefore, everybody is a role model. It's each individual's choice what their message is. It always has a meaning. Think about that meaning and about what your photos and stories tell the people that maybe do not know you in real life.

Many, many messages I received from women were concerning about the "perfect looking insta cycling models" that make them feel so far away from this "cycling status" to be achievable. And that's scary. There are many barriers for women to become a part of the cycling community (knowledge about what bike to buy, the financial aspects, the community, etc.). Acting like cycling, racing and interval training came natural to all of us, is just not the truth, is it? 🧐

Why is it important that there are more women in cycling?
For me because: CYCLING = EMPOWERMENT!

Cycling is great for fitness and health but also for self-esteem and character. I can train my body but also extend my horizon, explore my surroundings and travel autonoumsly. I have become a more independent and balanced person. Also, I have dreams, goals and (female) inspiration thanks to cycling.

With "cycling" I mean all areas: athletes, coaches, reporters, organizers and the industry itself.

With "empowerment" I mean: mental and physical empowerment for more stronger individuals, more representation and voice, more inclusive race formats, more community support, more knowledge about the female body and female physiology in sport.

It's a vicious cycle: the more women ride, the more women can identify with it and start cycling! Then, they can also be role models and so on.

After returning from the Holy Gravel a lot has happened in my mind. I loved to gravel in nature. It was a beautiful challenge as it pushed me to my limits. But I saw that there were way too few female riders. I know that I am super priviledged. I have amazing support of sponsors, I have a great team and I already have some bikepacking and racing expierences. But would I be here if I a) had no access to sponsorship like that? b) would not know some people at the event? and c) did not have the time to travel through whole Germany for a 4-day event?

Cycling is creative. Let’s be creative too and find ways to get more women into this sport!

HOLY GRAVEL RECAP #1:

Km 0: The morning of the Holy Gravel was finally there! After a bowl of warm porridge and some excellent coffee (thank you so much @johanna_jahnke x @benubags !), we rolled to the starting point in Hamburg. To me, everybody at the starting point looked super prepared. Fancy bikes, fancy bags, fancy bike computers, fancy hawaii shirts. Luckily, I had the sponsored equipment (8bar bike, Ortlieb panniers, Wahoo computer). This was absolutely necessary for this type of event/race. To be honest with you: without the sponsorship, it would have been difficult for me to afford all of this (Big thanks to @8barbikes!).

I was the rookie. And I felt intimidated.

Km 30: Everything was super fascinating, technical, beautiful and quite speedy right from the start! We stopped for a Franzbrötchen. I was on a "cycling high". The adventure was on. I loved it. The nature, the people, the atmosphere, the freedom I felt - amazing!

Km 80: My chain broke. I could partly get it fixed, but had to continue with a bumpy chain due to a missing chain lock that fit my 10 speed chain. I was in a small group and the track was still beautiful. When would I get my chain fixed? I was not sure. Just keep on going.

Km 100: I ate three pieces of homemade cake and drank a huge coffee in a lovely small cafe. I was tired already. The heat was strong. My chain? Don't ask.

Km 120: It is starting to get dark and I am starting to become hungry again. We decided to go to the next supermarket 20km away. I ate Harzer Roller and Pizzabrötchen in the parking lot.

Km 150-170: The sun sets at around 9:30 but in the forest it gets pretty dark at least an hour before. We haven't had planned a particular spot for the night. So we were lucky that we were allowed to camp at a fisher's club, right next to a lake. We arrived at 9:40 pm. I rinsed off my legs and washed other stinky parts of my body in the lake, put up my tent, had my chain fixed thanks to a friends' help (yeeeeah), ate all the bread I had carried with me and slept like a baby.

170km on the first day was hard for me. 9 hours in the saddle. Over 12 hours on the road. (...)

WHY GRAVEL? So, before I'll do my race recap and share my experiences and learnings from the Holy Gravel in Schleswig-Holstein I want talk about what gravel means to me first 😇

To ride gravel is to ride mostly unpaved, all-terrain roads. It's about mixing your passion of cycling, nature and adventure. Sometimes it is also combined with some racing, but in general it is not about "winning". Gravel bikes are robust, versatile and fast. They usually have bigger tires (38mm or more), I've seen mostly disc-brakes and tubeless, they do not have suspensions like MTBs do, they come with a dropbar, they often have mounts for all kinds of equipment like racks or bottle holders etc., so you're always ready for some bikepacking. Compared to cyclocross bikes they have a more comfortable geometry since they are build for endurance and long days in the saddle. Overall, it is more about exploring the wild nature on a reliable bike and less about performance & speed. It's a really fun and new kind of cycling to me, totally different to what I have done before.

MY SET UP: @8barbikes Mitte V2 Gravel Comp, with @dtswiss G1800 spline and @schwalbetires G One Ultrabite 40mm tubeless, saddle @sellesanmarco Aspide Racing Narrow and @met_helments allroad helmet.
